CONSTRUCTION OVERVIEW

Stria is a top-down knit that begins at the Back Panel, with German Short Rows to shape the left and right shoulder slopes. You’ll begin by casting on the full width of stitches, then work back and forth in short rows that gradually get wider and wider until all cast on stitches have been worked and both shoulder slopes have been shaped. The rest of the Back panel is worked straight down to the depth of the armhole, with no further shaping. Once the Back Panel is complete, you’ll put those stitches on hold and move on to begin working the Front Neckline.

The Front Neckline is worked in two separate sections – the left side and the right side. You’ll begin by picking up stitches along the LEFT shoulder slope of the Back Panel. From here, you’ll work German Short Rows once again to shape the shoulder slope (this time, of the Left Front Panel), while at the same time, working increases along the inside edge in order to shape the curve of the front neckline.

Once the left front shoulder and neckline is complete, you’ll once again place these stitches on hold while you work the right side in the exact same manner – only mirrored. Once both sides have been worked, you’ll connect the two sides by casting on stitches in between them.

The rest of the Front Panel is worked straight down to the depth of the armhole, with no further shaping. Once the Front Panel is complete, you’ll join it to the Back Panel and begin working in the round. You’ll then begin shaping the taper of each underarm by working a series of evenly spaced decreases along several rows. Once the underarms are complete, the rest of the body is worked straight down (in the round) with no further shaping. The body is then finished off with a couple inches of twisted ribbing.

From here, all that’s left to work is the neckband and each armhole. All three sections are worked in the same manner. First, you’ll pick up stitches along the circumference, then work about an inch and a half of twisted ribbing before finally finishing it off with an Italian Bind-Off.

Special Techniques: German Short Rows

This pattern is written assuming you know how to work German Short Rows, and are familiar with its terminology. If you are a visual learner and are unfamiliar with how to work German Short Rows, I highly recommend checking out this video, by Brooklyn Tweed.

HOW TO WORK GERMAN SHORT ROWS

German Short Rows are worked in the exact same manner on both the RS and WS of the fabric. Work each short row turn as follows:

  1. When the pattern says ‘turn’, simply turn your work to the opposite side (you will still have stitches remaining on your LH needle).

  2. Make dbl st (make a ‘double stitch’):

With working yarn held in FRONT, slip the first stitch on your LH needle purlwise. Bring the working yarn up and over your RH needle towards the back of your work (NOT between the two needles). This creates a ‘double stitch’.

  3. Give the working yarn a bit of a tug to tighten things up and continue working as instructed in the pattern.

  4. When you come back around to the ‘double stitch’ on the opposite side, treat this stitch as if it were a SINGLE stitch on your needle.

*NOTE: When working German Short Rows, it is important to remember to treat the ‘dbl st’ as a SINGLE stitch when you come back around to it on the opposite side. This pattern assumes you know how to do this (watch the recommended video above if you are unsure).

* A Note On Terminology

When the pattern states to work a number of stitches past a double stitch, this means to work the double stitch FIRST, then work the number of stitches stated before turning your work.

When the pattern states to work a stitch repeat to a number of stitches before a double stitch, this means that when you stop working the repeat, you should have the stated number of stitches remaining before you’ve reached the double stitch (i.e., the double stitch is NOT included in that count).

In both the above instances, it can be helpful to think of the double stitch as an ‘anchor point’ to determine when and where to perform your German Short Row turn(s).

stitch patterns

Okay! Before we get into the nitty gritty of the actual knitting pattern itself, let’s get ourselves familiar with the main stitch pattern used all throughout this blouse. Stria’s main stitch pattern is a simple 2-row repeat, consisting of some pretty basic, beginner friendly stitches – knits, purls, yarnovers, and left/right leaning decreases. Supplementing this stitch pattern are several columns of Half Fisherman’s Rib, which you’ll see located on Stria’s left and right sides. Be sure to familiarize yourself with these two stitch patterns before casting on! The instructions for how to work both stitch patterns are provided below:

The Main Stitch Pattern

Worked over the vast majority of the blouse, STRIA’s main stitch pattern is a very simple openwork lace motif, repeated over 2 rows/rounds and across 7 stitches:

The Back Panel

Construction of the Back Panel begins with casting on the full width of stitches for your size. From here, you will begin working back and forth using German Short Rows to shape the left and right shoulder slopes. Once short rows have been completed, the rest of the Back Panel is worked straight down (back and forth) with no further shaping, until you’ve reached the depth indicated for your size.

BEGIN HERE

With US 2.5/3mm circular needles, loosely CO 130 (144, 158, 169, 183) (197, 208, 222, 236) sts using the Long Tail Cast-On.

Place a locking stitch marker 41 (48, 55, 58, 65) (72, 75, 82, 89) sts in from each side of your CO. Place the markers on the CO edge itself and NOT on the needle. There should be 48 (48, 48, 53, 53) (53, 58, 58, 58) sts between the two markers. These sts are your blouse’s back neckline.

Short row shaping of the shoulder slopes is now complete.

Continue working back and forth in pattern as established until your work measures approx. 13 (13½, 14¼, 14¾, 15) (15½, 16¼, 16¾, 17¼) in./33 (34¼, 36¼, 37½, 38) (39¼, 41¼, 42½, 43¾) cm from the CO edge of the back neckline. Take care to ensure that you end your work after having completed a WS row.

*The above measurement should equate to approx. 125 (129, 135, 141, 145) (151, 155, 159, 165) rows worked for the entire Back Panel (including short rows).

The Back Panel is now complete. Cut yarn and place sts on hold while you work the Front Panel.

The Front Panel

The Front Panel begins at the Left Shoulder Slope & Neckline. You’ll shape the shoulder slope with German Short Rows, and at the same time, work a series of double yarnover increases across several rows in order to shape the left side of the front neckline. Once the left side of the Front Panel is complete, you’ll place its stitches on hold while the right side is worked in the same manner – only this time, mirrored.

The Left Front Shoulder

With US 2.5/3mm circular needles, pick up and knit 42 (49, 56, 59, 66) (73, 76, 83, 90) sts along the CO edge of the LEFT shoulder slope. Pick up and knit these sts as follows:

Pick up and knit 1 st where you placed the second marker (in between the last back neckline st and the first left shoulder st) – this extra st will be the selvedge edge for the left front neckline. Then, pick up and knit inside all 41 (48, 55, 58, 65) (72, 75, 82, 89) sts along the LEFT shoulder slope.

Now, begin working short rows to shape the left shoulder slope as follows:

The Left Front Shoulder slope has now been established. Continue to begin shaping the Left Front Neckline.

*

The Left Front Neckline

The Left Front Neckline is shaped using closed double yarnover increases. You’ll work a double yarnover on every RS row (abbreviated as yo twice in the instructions below), and close up those yarnovers by working them through the back loops on the next row (a WS row).

*NOTE: It is important that you close up the double yarnover increases on the wrong side of the work when you get to them, or you’ll end up with a massive hole along your neckline.

You have now completed shaping the Left Front Shoulder & Neckline. Cut yarn and place sts on hold while you work the right side.

*

The Right Front Shoulder

With US 2.5/3mm circular needles, pick up and knit 42 (49, 56, 59, 66) (73, 76, 83, 90) sts along the CO edge of the RIGHT shoulder slope. Pick up and knit these sts as follows:

Pick up and knit inside all 41 (48, 55, 58, 65) (72, 75, 82, 89) sts along the RIGHT shoulder slope. Then, pick up and knit 1 st where you placed the first marker (in between the last right shoulder st and the first back neckline st) – this extra st will be the selvedge edge for the right front neckline.

Now, begin working short rows to shape the right shoulder slope as follows:

The Right Front Neckline

The Right Front Neckline is shaped using closed double yarnover increases.

The BODY

Worked entirely in the round, the body is a tapered, Y-shaped tube that begins with a set of double decreases at each underarm, repeated every several rounds. These decreases serve to shape the blouse’s ‘Sleeves’.

Once the final decrease set is complete, the remainder of the body is worked in pattern as established to the start of the hem. The hem is then worked in twisted ribbing for a couple of inches and is bound off using the Italian Bind Off.

Shaping The Underarms

To set up for shaping the underarms, place a stitch marker at each of the following points to indicate where you will be making your double decreases:

Marker Placement:

From BOR, count 2 sts, pm, count 126 (140, 154, 165, 179) (193, 204, 218, 232) sts, pm, count 5 sts, pm, count 126 (140, 154, 165, 179) (193, 204, 218, 232) sts, pm, there should now be 3 sts remaining to BOR.

Marker Placement: From BOR, count 2 sts, pm, count 126 (140, 154, 165, 179) (193, 204, 218, 232) sts, pm, count 5 sts, pm, count 126 (140, 154, 165, 179) (193, 204, 218, 232) sts, pm, there should now be 3 sts remaining to BOR.

Now, begin working double decreases at each marker as follows:

Decrease Rnd:

Work in pattern as established to first marker, sm, dec-L, work in pattern as established to 3 sts before next marker, dec-R, sm, work in pattern as established to next marker, sm, dec-L, work in pattern as established to 3 sts before next marker, dec-R, sm, work in pattern as established to BOR. [8 sts dec’d]

Decrease Rnd: Work in pattern as established to first marker, sm, dec-L, work in pattern as established to 3 sts before next marker, dec-R, sm, work in pattern as established to next marker, sm, dec-L, work in pattern as established to 3 sts before next marker, dec-R, sm, work in pattern as established to BOR. [8 sts dec’d]

Continue working in pattern as established while at the same time working the above Decrease Rnd every 6th round a total of 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) (5, 5, 5, 5) more times. [32 (32, 32, 40, 40) (40, 40, 40, 40) sts dec’d]

Underarm shaping is now complete. You should now have a total of 230 (258, 286, 300, 328) (356, 378, 406, 434) sts on your needles.

*

Completing The Body

Continue working in pattern as established (with NO further decreases) until your work measures approximately 19 (19½, 20, 20, 20½) (20½, 21, 21½, 22) in./48¼ (49½, 50¾, 50¾, 52) (52, 53¼, 54½, 55¾) cm. from the CO edge of the back neckline, or 2½ in./6¼ cm shorter than your desired length.

*

The Hem

Optional: Switch to US 1.5/2.5mm needles.

*If you want a tighter hem that hugs at your hips a bit more, you may switch to smaller needles here, but it is not necessary. I did not switch to smaller needles for the sample shown throughout this pattern.

Rnd 1:

(k1-tbl, p1) to end of rnd.

Rnd 1: (k1-tbl, p1) to end of rnd.

Repeat Rnd 1 until the Hem measures approximately 2½ in./6¼ cm. Bind off using the Italian Bind Off.

The 'Sleeves'

With 16” US 2.5/3mm circular needles, pick up and knit 154 (157, 162, 169, 173) (177, 184, 186, 190) sts around the armhole edge. This equates to approx. 2 sts for every 3 rows plus the underarm CO st.

Place marker to indicate BOR.

Now, work the next round as follows:

Decrease Rnd:

[purl 5 (5, 6, 6, 6) (6, 7, 7, 7) sts, p2tog] a total of 20 times, purl the remaining sts. [20 sts, dec’d]

Decrease Rnd: [purl 5 (5, 6, 6, 6) (6, 7, 7, 7) sts, p2tog] a total of 20 times, purl the remaining sts. [20 sts, dec’d]

You should now have a total of 134 (137, 142, 149, 153) (157, 164, 166, 170) sts on your needle. Now, work the remaining rounds as follows:

Rnd 1:

Rnd 2:

(k1, k1-tbl) to end of rnd.

(p1, k1-tbl) to end of rnd.

Rnd 1: (k1, k1-tbl) to end of rnd.

Rnd 2: (p1, k1-tbl) to end of rnd.

Repeat Rnd 2 a total of 12 times. Bind off using the Italian Bind-Off.

Work the second ‘sleeve’ in the exact same manner.

The Neckband

With 16” US 1.5/2.5mm circular needles, pick up and knit approx. 120 (124, 128, 138, 142) (146, 156, 160,164) sts around the neckband. Pick up and knit these sts as follows:

Pick up and knit all 48 (48, 48, 53, 53) (53, 58, 58, 58) sts along the Back Neckline, pick up and knit 12 (14, 16, 14, 16) (18, 18, 20, 22) sts along the vertical edge of the Left Front Neckline, pick up and knit 48 (48, 48, 53, 53) (53, 58, 58, 58) sts along the diagonal and horizontal edges of the Front Neckline, pick up and knit 12 (14, 16, 14, 16) (18, 18, 20, 22) sts along the vertical edge of the Right Front Neckline. Place marker to indicate BOR.

*Note: When it comes time to pick up and knit along the diagonal edges of the Front Neckline (where you made your double yarnover increases), you will have an easier time keeping things neat and tidy if you pick up your stitches inside the yarnover loops (rather than the selvedge edge).

Now, work the next few rounds as follows:

Rnd 1:

Rnd 2:

Rnd 3:

Purl all sts.

(k1, k1-tbl) to end of rnd.

(p1, k1-tbl) to end of rnd.

Rnd 1: Purl all sts.

Rnd 2: (k1, k1-tbl) to end of rnd.

Rnd 3: (p1, k1-tbl) to end of rnd.

Repeat Rnd 3 a total of 12 times. Bind off using the Italian Bind-Off.
